Chris' use of an entirely black background for this piece adds to its amazing amount of depth already created by his uses of textures and layering. It really makes each and every color pop off the canvas. Even small dallops of dark blue leap out at the viewer and seem to float in midair. A pretty amazing feat in a canvas this size. Have you tried painting? It's a blast, but it can also be very difficult to envoke such depth without the colors blending too much and turning muddy (especially when you use as many different colors as Chris seems to in some pieces; not to mention the fact he paints all of it in one session! No waiting for anything to dry. Just.... go!  ;) ).
